Kelso Dunes

I took the opportunity during a recent trip to Vegas to explore the Mojave and make it to the amazing Kelso Dunes.  These dunes are unique in the fact that they are one of only 35 dunes in the world that are “singing dunes”.  They actually reverberate as sand slides down the dune against stationary sand below. The result is a booming sound that almost sounds like a low flying aircraft. I was lucky enough to hear this for myself.  While hiking in 111 degrees isn’t always advisable my husband and I packed a bunch of water and spent a few, very warm, hours exploring this magical landscape.

I always have connected with the desert landscape, and the Mojave provides a great ecological diversity. I must admit that Joshua Trees are some of my favorite plants.  We took time to explore the other-worldly looking Ivanpah solar facility, and also stopped to photograph the sunset view over the National Chloride Company’s salt operation near Amboy, CA.
